Application

Paving the path for exploitation and market uptake. By 2028, Fabulose aims to deliver a circular, bio-based, and safe animal-free leather-like fabric reaching TRL 5, paving the way for full market readiness. The project combines sustainability assessments, stakeholder collaboration, and strategic exploitation to ensure a smooth transition from research to real-world application.

Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD)

Safety, sustainability, and circularity are key priorities of Fabulose. Comprehensive guidelines and assessment frameworks are developed in line with legislation and best practices, covering:

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Techno-Economic Assessment
  • Social Impact Assessment

Additionally, all materials and processes undergo toxicity testing to minimize environmental and health risks. By integrating social, economic, and regulatory insights, Fabulose ensures responsible innovation that benefits workers, consumers, and communities — fully aligned with the EU Green Deal and Safe and Sustainable by Design principles.

Social Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement

Fabulose actively involves stakeholders across the value chain to accelerate the adoption of bio-based leather-like fabrics. Through co-creation, training, and workshops, stakeholders help shape sustainable materials and processes that align with both industry requirements and societal values. Knowledge-sharing activities, including site visits and practical resources, support replication and empower partners to integrate Fabulose innovations into their own production processes.

Exploitation and Market Uptake

Fabulose advances lab-proven technologies (TRL 2–3) to pilot-scale production (TRL 5), ensuring consistent quality and scalability of bio-based, animal-free leather-like fabrics.

The project will produce prototypes for handbags, small leather goods, and shoes, with applications expanding to furniture, automotive interiors, apparel, and home decor. By collaborating with key industry partners, Fabulose accelerates the adoption of next-generation bio-based materials, creating new market opportunities, fostering sustainable growth, and reinforcing Europe’s circular and green manufacturing landscape.

To secure long-term impact and commercial success, the project develops validated business models, replication strategies, and a robust IP management framework. These measures support market readiness and facilitate the transition from pilot production to full-scale commercialization.
